Le’infanta – Maia Ramishvili

Published June 4, 2026

The painting “L’ Infante” created by Maia Ramishvili in 2018, as the name suggests depicts a daughter of the ruling monarch of Spain or Portugal, who isn’t in the direct line of succession. The painting’s central figure is a young girl in the gorgeous colorful petit farthingale or crinoline dress whilst being surrounded by the fanciful royal drapery. It’s clear to see  that artist Maia Ramishvili was inspired by Spanish royal court paintings from the 17th-18th centuries. In particular works by Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez who were the favorite artists in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal. Velázquez’s two paintings seem to be the main inspiration for Maia’s “Infanta” to be specific “Las Meninas”, a masterpiece completed by Velázquez late in his life. “Las Meninas” or ladies in waiting, depict a young Infanta Margaret Theresa surrounded by her court maids, entertainers, and servants in the royal art studio. Whilst the second painting is the “Infanta Margarita Teresa in a Blue Dress ”  which depicts Infanta Margaret Theresa now grown a bit and wearing a blue dress unlike the “Las Meninas”  this is a portrait isolating Infanta Margaret from her ladies in waiting. Margaret is standing alone and holding her dress and looking straight at the viewer and the painter. Maia Ramishvili’s “Infanta” seems to be loosely based on these two masterpieces, the pose of the figure is reminiscent of the “Infanta Margarita Teresa in a Blue Dress” having the same primly pose with hands outstretched hand holding the lavish dress. And similar to the Velázquez painting Infanta is depicted with a solemn face looking toward the observer.  Even though the viewer can observe the influence of the Spanish golden age on the artwork, her own artistic vision and style shine through the colorful crinoline dress and the drapery that surrounds the figure of the young royal. The colors and the texture of the art seem to convey a story of their own, unlike the contrasting colors scene in the Velázquez works Maia depicts her Infanta dressed in a colorful dress more reminiscent of the earlier period of renaissance or the later dresses which were favored during the late French kingdom and the neo-classical revival.
